18. y.y’da Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’ nun barut ihtiyacını karşılamak üzere BARUTHANE- İ AMİRE adıyla Bakırköy’ ün yerleşim bölgesinin dışında kurulan Baruthane 1960’ lı yıllarda Emlakbank’ ın bu bölgede başlattığı “Uydukent” projesinin içinde yer almaktaydı. İkinci derece korunması gereken tarihi yapı niteliği taşıyan bu binanın dış kabuğu aynen muhafaza edilerek iki yılda inşa ve restarasyonu tamamlanıp modern iç donanımıyla çağdaş bir mekan oluşturularak 3 MART 1993’ te “YUNUS EMRE KÜLTÜR MERKEZİ” adıyla açıldı.13.000 m2 ‘lik arsa üzerine 2562 m2 olarak inşa edilmiş kültür merkezi 270 m2 ‘lik salon ve 306 m2 ‘lik sahneden oluşan 360 kişilik tiyatro salonu, 300 m2 sergi salonu ve 14 Ekim 1997’de faaliyete geçen toplam 300 m2 ‘lik alanı kapsayan çok amaçlı kullanılan 235 kişilik Turhan Tuzcu Sahnesi ile kafeteryası , yeşil alanları ve değişik mimarisi ile bu tarihi ve sıcak mekan yöre halkıyla bütünleşmiştir.

1989 Yılında Vakıf Tiyatrosu olarak faaliyetine başlayan; 28.06.1990 gün ve 74 sayılı  Bakırköy Belediye Meclisinde  kabul edilen Bakırköy Belediye Tiyatroları yönetmeliğini esas alarak, 1991 yılının Ekim ayında Prof. Dr.Zeliha BERKSOY’un önderliğinde, 1987 tarih ve 87\ 11782 sayılı Bakanlar Kurulu kararı ve 5441 sayılı Devlet Tiyatroları kanununa  göre ,  yaklaşık 50 yıl aradan sonra kurulan ülkemizin 3. ödenekli  ilk ve tek ilçe tiyatrosu olan Bakırköy Belediye Tiyatroları, 3.ödenekli kamu tiyatrosu  olması  sıfatıyla,  tiyatrolar  içinde  çok  önemli bir başlangıç oluşturmuştur.
