İLK DÖNEMLER Ülkemizde bugünkü anlamıyla düzenli yarışlar ilk kez 23 Eylül 1856 tarihinde İzmir'de yapıldı. O dönemin İngiltere Başkonsolosu Mr. Patterson ve Evliyazade Refik Bey'in öncülüğünde Smyrna Races Club'ı (İzmir Yarış Kulübü) kuruldu. O dönemin İzmir yarışları yılda bir kez Paskalya günleri düzenleniyordu. S.R.C. yarışları 20. yüzyıl başında en parlak dönemini yaşamış 1. Dünya Savaşı ile birlikte sona ermiştir. Osmanlı Padişahları arasında spora düşkünlüğü ile ünlenen Abdülaziz de İstanbul Kağıthane'de, İzmir'dekine benzer biçimde at yarışları düzenletmişti. Aynı dönemlerde Samsun, Manisa, Diyarbakır'da da at yarışları yapıldığı bilinmektedir.
